Rotating 5% categories: how to activate them and when they are worth it

Activate each quarter's categories in the issuer's app or site, ideally the day they are announced, since activation usually applies to the whole quarter even if you activate late. The bonus is capped, commonly at $1,500 of spend per quarter, which is $75 at 5 percent, so plan which categories you will actually use.

Rotating category cards offer a high rate, often 5 percent, on a short list of categories that changes every quarter. They are free, the rate is real, and almost everyone who holds one leaves money on the table in the same two ways: not activating, and not knowing the cap.

Activation is not automatic

Each quarter, the issuer announces the categories a few weeks in advance. You then have to activate, usually with one tap in the issuer’s app, on their website, or through an email link. Until you do, the categories earn the base rate.

Most issuers let you activate any time during the quarter and apply the bonus to purchases made since the quarter began. That is generous, but it also means people put it off and forget. The simplest habit is to activate the day the announcement arrives.

Enrollment-style perks are exactly what splurn Premium’s enrollment reminders cover: a nudge when a new quarter’s activation opens, and another if you have not done it.

The cap is the whole story

The bonus applies up to a cap on spending in the categories, commonly $1,500 per quarter. Past that, the categories earn the base rate.

Cap on spend Max bonus at 5% Per year
$1,500 a quarter $75 $300

That upper bound is useful. It tells you two things: a rotating card is a nice supplement, not a main card, and once you have crossed the cap in a quarter you should move that spending to your next best card. splurn counts the cap for you and moves the card down the ranking when it is used up.

Fitting it into a wallet

  • Grocery quarters are the easiest to max, since most households spend $1,500 on groceries in three months. Remember the usual exclusions still apply: warehouse clubs and superstores rarely count.
  • Gas and restaurant quarters are worth activating even if you will not reach the cap.
  • Online shopping and wholesale club quarters can be large if they line up with a planned purchase.
  • Payment app quarters (a specific mobile wallet or payment service) can be used at almost any store, if you route purchases through the app.

Two rotating cards from different issuers often cover different categories in the same quarter, each with its own cap.

What it is worth to you

Be honest about which quarters you will use. If you will reliably max two quarters a year and partially use two more, the card is worth roughly $200 a year to you. That is a good return for a no-fee card and a weak reason to carry it as your only card.

The short version

  • Activate every quarter, the day the categories are announced.
  • The cap, typically $1,500 of spend, limits the bonus to about $75 a quarter.
  • Once you cross the cap, switch to your next best card for that category.

Quick answers

What happens if I forget to activate my 5% categories?

Purchases earn the card's base rate instead. Most issuers let you activate late within the quarter and apply the bonus back to the start of it, but check your card's rule.

How much is a quarterly 5% category worth at most?

At a $1,500 quarterly cap, the maximum is $75 in rewards per quarter, or $300 a year if you max all four quarters.

Can I use two rotating category cards in the same quarter?

Yes. Issuers choose different categories, so two cards can cover different spending. Each has its own cap.
