Basics

What is splurn?

splurn is a card concierge for iPhone. Open it in a store and it tells you which of your credit cards to pay with, based on the store's category, your cards' earn rates, any category caps you have hit, and the statement credits you still have. It also lists every perk and credit on your cards with the date it resets, and reminds you before one expires.

How does splurn know which store I am in?

With your permission, splurn uses your location while the app is open and matches nearby points of interest to a merchant category. Location is used on your phone only and is never sent to or stored by splurn. If location is off, you pick the store or category yourself, and splurn remembers your corrections.

Do I have to enter my card numbers?

No. You tap the cards you carry from a list of about 27 popular cards, or add one by hand with its rates and fee. splurn never asks for or stores a card number, security code or bank password.

Is splurn free?

Yes. Picking cards, the store ranking, the perks list and reminders are free. splurn Premium, at $7.99 a month or $59.99 a year, adds the missed-credits report, a nudge when a credit applies where you are standing, and enrollment reminders.

Which phones does splurn support?

splurn is an iPhone app for iOS 18 and later. There is no Android or web app yet; this site shows what the app does and points you to the download.

Cards and perks

How does splurn decide which card is best?

For each card you hold, splurn multiplies the earn rate for the store's category by a point value you can change (1 cent a point by default), applies any bonus caps you have already used up, and adds any statement credit the purchase would use. The highest expected return ranks first. Protections like travel insurance are summarized and linked but never priced into the ranking.

What is a point worth in splurn?

One cent by default, as a placeholder rather than a guaranteed redemption value. You can set your own cents-per-point number, and it changes which card ranks first. People who transfer points to airline partners often use a higher number; people who redeem for cash use one cent.

Which perks and credits does splurn track?

Monthly, quarterly, semiannual and annual statement credits, credits that run on your card anniversary year, credits that must be enrolled or activated first, rotating and selectable bonus categories, and category spending caps. Each one shows the value left and the date it resets.

A store is in the wrong category. Can I fix it?

Yes. On the store screen, change the category under "Counted as". splurn remembers the correction for that store. Merchant codes are set by card networks and acquirers, so a store does not always count the way it presents itself; Costco, Target and Walmart are common examples.

How current is the card data?

Every card in the catalog carries the date its terms were last checked against the issuer's page, and cards that have not been checked within 90 days drop out of the rankings until they are. Issuers change terms, so splurn shows the source date and links to the terms rather than asking you to take its word for it.

Accounts and privacy

Do I need an account?

No. splurn works entirely on your phone. Sign in with Apple or an emailed code is optional and only saves your wallet so it syncs to another iPhone.

What does connecting my card accounts do?

Connecting through Plaid gives splurn read-only access to card transactions, so credits are marked as used the moment a charge posts and bonus caps count themselves. splurn never sees your bank login and cannot move money. Transactions are kept for 180 days and then deleted, and you can disconnect at any time in Wallet › Settings.

Is Plaid safe?

Plaid is the account-connection service used by apps like Venmo, Robinhood and many budgeting tools. You sign in on Plaid's own screen, often through your bank's website, and splurn receives a read-only token that is encrypted on splurn's server. splurn requests only the Transactions product, not balances, identity or payments.

How do I delete my data?

Wallet › Settings › Delete account removes your account, saved wallet, connections and transactions from splurn's server immediately and revokes any Plaid connections. If you never created an account, there is nothing on the server to delete; removing the app clears your phone.

Premium

What does splurn Premium include?

Three things: a missed-credits report that shows every credit you could have used and why (this one reads your linked accounts, so it needs a bank connection), a nudge when a credit applies at the store you are in, and reminders for every perk you have to enroll in or activate first.

How much does Premium cost, and how do I cancel?

$7.99 a month or $59.99 a year, billed through your Apple ID and renewing automatically until you cancel. Cancel any time in iPhone Settings › your name › Subscriptions › splurn Premium; you keep Premium until the end of the paid period. Restore purchases is on the Premium screen.

Does splurn make money from recommending cards?

splurn may show cards you do not hold that would earn more at a store, with a plain disclosure. Any fee splurn might earn never changes the order of your own cards or of the suggestions. splurn is not a bank, issuer or lender and does not decide credit.
